Connections is the new extended schools provision, incorporating a breakfast club and after-school club and is run as part of the education provision at Henwick Primary School. All staff are employed directly by the school, ensuring a fully consistent approach from the beginning of the day to the end. Children are at the heart of everything we do and our aims are to ensure that children feel safe, secure, supported and above all have fun learning.
It is the aim of the school to provide around the clock provision to help working parents and carers, supporting their children in their learning and social and emotional development. This provision is open to children from within our school community as well as St Thomas More Primary School. Both the breakfast and after-school provision are open to children from Reception to Year 6.
Our Vision is to provide the best possible education for all our children in an environment where they feel safe, valued and confident. We strive to accommodate all learners and learning styles and to develop our pupil’s understanding of themselves as learners.
We want our children to know and understand what motivates them, what turns them off, what empowers them and how to make the best of all that life has to offer them.
Our vision is echoed throughout all of our extended schools provisions and we ensure a consistent approach by ensuring that all staff are employed directly by the school.
Being an in-house facility allows the children to be familiar with their surroundings as for some this may be an issue when starting a new breakfast or after-school club on top of starting at a new school. Also if your circumstances change which then require attendance at a breakfast or after-school club, your child will be kept in their familiar surroundings until you are able to collect them.
The clubs are led by a qualified teacher, Mrs Baker, who has a wealth of childcare and teaching experience. She is ably supported by experienced and qualified staff, many of whom your children may already be familiar with.

Breakfast Club at Connections
Breakfast club runs in the dining hall from 7.30am to 8.45am, with breakfast being served until 8.15am. Following this children are then taken (subject to age and need) to their classes (or walked to St Thomas More by Henwick staff) in time for the start of the school day.
Breakfast consists of a variety of cereals, toast with condiments, bagels, fruit, porridge, and fruit juice. On occasions, they are also able offer some hot items, including eggs served in a variety of ways, sausages, beans etc. Tea is also offered.
As Henwick is a Gold Award winning Healthy School, children are encouraged to make healthy choices for breakfast and as such we do not offer sugary cereals to them. We also encourage them to try something new on occasions; however no child would ever start their day hungry.
In addition to being served a delicious breakfast, children are also given the opportunity to read, complete any homework, draw or play with a variety of toys and games.
After-School Club at Connections
We all know how it feels to get to the end of the day and want time to relax and enjoy some ‘down’ time. For others, they have worked so hard all day and want to run off some energy.
At Connections we feel that it is important that children are given the opportunity to do what suits them best. To facilitate this, we offer a choice of games and activities following a half-termly theme.
Some of the activities available to the children will include construction toys, outdoor play, drawing, puzzles, table football, home corner and role play to name but a few. In addition to these games and activities, there will be a weekly craft which the children can take part in. This will be offered every day so that no matter which days your child attends the club, everyone has a chance to take part. These crafts will be following the half termly theme.
There will also be Numeracy and Literacy support for the children and help with their homework too.
Social Communication is an important life skill and your child will be encouraged to develop these skills alongside turn taking, sharing, manners and teamwork.
The children will receive a hot dinner each night. The menu will vary and staff will encourage children to help prepare food if they want to. There will also be the opportunity for them to take part in cookery workshops. We feel that this is a great opportunity for your children to learn how to prepare and serve a variety of meals, developing their culinary skills under close supervision of specialist qualified staff.
Our vison is for the children to sit down and share a meal together, this family style dining experience is a great opportunity for your children to learn social skills, sharing and how to actively converse at the table with their peers and friends.
Ultimately our aim is that when you collect your children, they will have been fed a nutritious, tasty meal, had fun with friends and had help with their homework; meaning you can enjoy quality time with them when you get home
