Governing Body

School governors - what do they do?

School governors play a vital part in the success of schools. They are volunteers who work with the headteacher and, in Greenwich, with the Royal Borough, to improve standards in their school. Ofsted, the national body that inspects schools, have been placing increasing emphasis on good governance as a key element in the effectiveness of a school. They provide both challenge and support to the headteacher, taking the role of a 'critical friend'.

The core functions of the governing body are:

  • ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  • holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
  • overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Governors act collectively, not individually, meet three times a year, and serve for a term of four years.

Types of governor

Parent governors: Parents, including carers, of a child at the school, elected by the parent body.

Staff governors: Teaching or support staff, elected by the staff. The headteacher is also a staff governor.

Authority governors: Appointed by the local authority from a political party or the community.

Co-opted governors: These are appointed by the governing body to represent community interests. They are expected to be committed to the good governance and success of the school even if they do not work or live close to it.

Governing bodies may also appoint non-voting Associate Governors because of specific expertise and experience they can contribute to the effective governance and success of the school.

We currenty have one vacancy for a Co-Opoted Governor.

Governors at Henwick

As they hold an important public office, and in the interests of transparency, all governing bodies now have to publish information about their governors, and their governing body arrangements on their website.

Below you will find information on the current governors (and former governors who held office during the past year): their name; who they represent or were appointed by; their term of office; committees they serve on and any positions of responsibility they hold; any relevant business interests; whether they are also a governor elsewhere; relationships  (if any) with school staff; and their attendance record over the past year for both governing body and committees (figures indicate meetings attended out of a possible total).

Committees

The Henwick governing body has two committees which deal with much of the detailed work of the governors, giving the full governing body more scope to concentrate on more strategic matters. All governors serve on one or both of the committees, and these committees, like the governing body, meet three times each school year. Committees provide reports on their work to the full governing body.

Business and Resources Committee (Chair: Lizzie Emilion) - this committee deals with finance, staffing and premises issues. Among other things it prepares and monitors the school budget and considers value for money; approves the staffing structure and develops pay policy; and covers health and safety and security matters.

Standards and Curriculum Committee (Chair: Nancy Hall) - this committee monitors the preparation and implementation of the School Development Plan and improvement programmes; oversees the quality of teaching and learning; and considers pupil progress, including that of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, and any vulnerable groups.
