At Henwick, we link writing in literacy lessons to the topic the each half term. We choose to do this to give children more time to develop knowledge about the topic, which then enriches their writing. This is especially important for non-fiction writing; children need to have knowledge and understanding of a topic in order to write about it confidently.
Our English leaders have developed a scheme of work which maps units of writing to our topics for each year group. This ensures that children in all year groups have an opportunity to write in a balance of genres and the expectations of composition and effect and spelling, punctuation and grammar progress as children move up through the school.
Children are also taught spelling, punctuation and grammar in discrete sessions to reinforce this and so it can be applied to writing opportunities across the curriculum.
