RSHE

At Henwick, we follow the Jigsaw scheme of work for Relationship, Sex and Heath Education (RSHE). There is a different area focus each half-term and as these are the same through-out the school it allows us to deliver learning journeys that build upon each other every year, meaning that the children get lessons that are matched to their developmental age.

We support the children in our school community to develop the skills needed to lead confident, healthy and independent lives in a variety of ways on a daily basis and these are also taught explicitly through the RSHE programme. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. It also gives children an understanding of British Values and the nine protected characteristics, which are taught across all subjects, throughout the school.

At the beginning of each year, children take part in writing their class charter and this happens after they are explicitly taught about the UNICEF rights of the child, children choose appropriate rights and responsibilities to ensure they are able to learn in a safe and calm environment.

Sex and Relationship Education (SRE)

In the second half of the summer term, children in Years 1 to 6 undertake SRE as part of our RSHE curriculum. Effective SRE enables children and young people to see that changes as they grow are perfectly normal and something that we can talk about sensibly together. It can also develop personal skills needed by pupils to establish and maintain relationships, while giving the child tools by which they can safeguard themselves in the future.

As parents and carers, you have the right to withdraw your child from the elements of SRE that are not part of the statutory National Curriculum. We write to all parents and carers ahead of time, each year, to consult on this and offer parents and carers the opportunity to see the resources we use too. Below is the consultation letter from 2022-23.
