Visiting our School
We encourage prospective parents to visit the school. Formal open mornings take place in the Autumn term where prospective parents tour the school. We are happy to arrange for prospective parents to look round the school at other times and this can be arranged with the school office staff.
Outdoor Learning and Forest School
At Henwick we have a particular passion for learning outdoors and Forest School, we recognise its importance in the development of our children, the benefits to their learning and most importantly the fun it can bring!
When children are offered the opportunity to work and learn outside there is evidence that their confidence is boosted along with their social skills, communication, motivation, knowledge and understanding and turn taking. Children are able to learn alongside different rules and experiences than they would have in the classroom, taking risks in a safe space with trusted adults.
Children are able to get up close to nature and the adults that work alongside them are skilled in following the children’s experiences and interests in both the outside areas and the Forest School. Whilst facilitated by the adults leading the sessions, the children are able to use their imaginations’ to the max! Within our Forest School itself we have had dens built to shelter from dragons, bridges made for Superheroes and heroines, Stick people made from twigs and branches and houses made for the many bugs that are found. The mud kitchens in all of our outside areas are very popular and we have a number of budding chefs who like to explore the facilities and wide range of ingredients on offer!
Our accredited Forest School leader is incredibly experienced with a range of skills she has developed over the years. We are incredibly fortunate to have such wonderful outside learning areas as well as an extensive Forest School and it is for this reason that we access them all year round and as much as possible throughout the day. Our outside learning areas are zoned to allow for specific learning to take place in each of the spaces and this is linked to the learning which has taken place within the classroom.
Henwick is an inclusive school and we place great importance on the need to ensure that all our pupils are included equally in opportunities for learning. The school’s ethos and the values we practice and promote aim to secure equal opportunities for all the pupils at Henwick whatever their age, gender, ethnicity, attainment and background. As a learning community all the staff work hard and are fully committed to securing the best provision for our pupils and the different groups that they may represent:
- Girls and boys
- Minority ethnic and faith groups, Travellers, Asylum Seekers and Refugees
- pupils with disabilities
- EAL pupils (English as an Additional Language)
- Special Educational Needs pupils
- Looked after children
- Sick children and those from families under stress
- Pupils at risk of disaffection and exclusion
Our Policy documents and Schemes of Work are subject to regular review and the school is involved in ongoing self-evaluation to ensure that our aims and those principles that support inclusion are being appropriately implemented.
The school day begins at 8.50 am and children are allowed to come onto the school site from 8.40 am; the school day ends at 3.10 pm.
