SEN Resources
At Henwick we are committed to supporting all children to access the curriculum so that they are able to achieve, make progress and enjoy experiences in line with their peers.
We are fully inclusive and strive to provide learning environments which allow children to access their learning.
Our Inclusion room is a treasure trove of resources which children are able to access throughout the day.
Some of the resources you will see around school include:
Ear Defenders
Children are able to access ear defenders as and when they need them to support with noise sensitivities and or focus.

Fidget Toys
Children are provided with fidget toys when they need support with focus or to manage sensory, emotional and cognitive experiences. Children who have an ADHD diagnosis will be offered fidget toys.

Chair Bands
Children who struggle to focus find chair bands helpful as they are able to fidget and push their feet or legs against the band which provides them with resistance and an outlet for physical activity. Children with a diagnosis or who are on the ADHD pathway will be offered a chair band.

Chew Buddies
Chew buddies provide a sensory input for the mouth and jaw, they can support with anxiety, stress, ADHD and ASD.

Wedges or Wobble Cushions
Wobble cushions support those with ASD or ADHD traits. They provide sensory input, improve focus and support with motor skill development.

Pencil Grips
Where children find they struggle with fine motor skills which impacts on their handwriting and presentation we support them with the use of pencil grips or ergonomically designed pens and pencils.

Timers
It can be difficult for some children to focus for periods of time and the different timers used for them in school allow them to see how much time is left for a task or until a transition.

Sound Buttons
Where children might struggle with cognitive overload sound buttons allow them record their sentence and listen back to it more than once allowing them to focus on the spelling, punctuation and presentation when writing it down.

Coloured Overlays
We support children who have a diagnosis of dyslexia, are on the pathway to one or who are supported by STEPS, by providing them with a coloured overlay to use when reading. These minimise the glare of black on white which reduces visual stress and improves reading comfort and fluency.

Now and Next Boards
These provide visual representations of what is happening now and what is going to happen next to support children who benefit from having clear structure and a predictable routine.

Visual Timetables
All classrooms have a visual timetable in class which has visual representations of what is happening throughout the day in order to support children who might become anxious or who benefit from a clear structure and predictable routine.

Widgets
For some children they can struggle to access the written word and process what is being communicated to them. Simple visual representations help children to process and understand communication. At Henwick we aim to ensure that all new language, signs and vocabulary is accompanied by Widgets to support with understanding.

Work Stations
At school children might benefit from a work station. These enable children to focus on their own learning, in a structured, distraction-free way.

Slope
Where children struggle with fine motor skills and in particular their handwriting and presentation, a slope might be recommended by Occupational Therapy to support.

Weighted Resources
These can provide children with sensory seeking needs the deep pressure or weight that they need to be able to focus.

Interventions
There are occasions whereby children will require time in a small group or individually with an adult to focus on specific areas or gaps in learning, communication or emotions. In school we run a number of interventions to support our children. Below are just a few examples of some of the interventions which are run alongside daily reading for fluency, maths fluency and spelling fluency interventions.
